This is a period piece centered in China, during the inital stages of the War when Japan attacks China. The film is set in 1937 in Nanjing, China during the Nanking Massacre, at the time of the Second Sino-Japanese War. A group of escapees, finding sanctuary in a Church compound, risk their lives as they struggle to survive the plight and persecution brought on by the violent invasion of the city

There is another movie which came out a year ago, and was just released of DVD dealing with the same event and time period. the Movie is called City of Life and Death.

Another movie dealing with Nanking is "John Rabe". It is a German film released in the US within the last two years. It won Germany's "Best Film" award.

It tells the story of the German businessman who stayed behind and organized the international community's safe zone, which later provided refuge to several hundred thousand Chinese civilians.

It has some good military action sequences but is primarily a character-driven film. It's got Steve Buscemi in a major role!
