I was wondering if there has been any discussion about holding events in Northern California for a change of scenery. That and its quite a drive for those of us out of state to head down to southern CA all the time.

I think we could all agree that it would be great to go to different venues from year to year. But travel time is as mentioned a big determining factor. And while many events are in Southern California, the two largest events held on the West Coast are not in Southern California, but Central California. Reenactors are a limited breed, in order to get 10 you have to fish through 10,000 people. So you need the large population centers to draw members from. Look at the demographics of 27,000 CHG Website hits during 2011. Of the California hits (4,700) were from Los Angeles alone. It gives a pretty good indication where reenactors live. And if you consider just CHG members, the percentage are comparible at 8%, 18% and 74%

Actually, that 17% in the mid-Cal (incl the SF Bay area) has a lot more people than show on the CHG rolls. There are more than several dozen NorCal reenactors from the upper area who regularly slip into CHG events w/o paying CHG dues.
They claim to be members of "independent" groups such as the MCA, HFA, or 9SS (and their OR cohorts); all of whom claim to have done "heavy lifting" and claim to have been awarded "reciprocal priveleges" by the CHG.
However, none of them pay CHG dues but they attend CHG events w/o a surcharge. There are a lot of reenactors in NorCal, who can stage events for the CHG. The issue is to get them all in the CHG tent before moving ahead.

That's true, Stoser. We can only account and work with what's on the CHG rolls. If people don't want to join our ranks, that's fine. But they can't complain when we don't cater to them. The Board has to worry about the CHG member first.
As for our Northern California members, it's a tough call for us to want to try and set an event up north because our staff is currently Southern California centric and we don't have much knowledge of the sites there. We've talked it over and considered it, but right now it's not in the cards. Also, given the current demographic, a Northern California event would be used more by non-CHG members than actual members. Which means, we have to consider insurance issues regarding non-members, money handling for event fees, and governance of the event over a primarily non-member presence to prevent incidents and to make sure our Bylaws are adhered to. We already have a problem with all of these, especially the latter, at the current events we host.
Folks have to remember that these events and this entire club is ran and operated by volunteers using their own personal time and resources to make these events happen.

This diagram shows where the CHG Membership pockets center around. Also where the main event sites are located. It shows how Camp Roberts is ideally located to support the club. Also these are the Parent Co-Op organizations which support reenacting in Oregon, Washington and Northern California Website – Forum- [CHG] California Historical Group (26 units) Website – Forum- [RPS] Research & Preservation Society (14 units) Website – Forum- [NWTO] Northwest Theater of Operations (4 units) Website – Forum- [AG44] Army Group 44 (3 units) Website – Forum- [WMHS] Western Military Historical Society (5 units) Website – Forum- [NWHA] Northwest Historical Association (5 units) Website – Forum- [GPWA] Great Patriotic War Association (2 units) Website – Forum- [HFA] Historical Forces Association (4 units)

We had the plane fly over our first year. We may try to get him back again this year. Ernie is looking to have his event again in August. I have some photos from last year if anyone is interested.
