He joined Easy at Fort Bragg just before they moved to Camp Shanks for shipment overseas. He jumped into normandy, and was presant for the fighting in and around Carentan. He also took part in Market Garden. He went through bastogne, but by then he was in HQ platoon and carried a radio, so he was slightly behind the line. He was the trooper that found Hitler's staff car, and tested it to see if it was really bullet proof. He was one of the rare soldiers to go through Normandy, Holland, Bastogne, and Germany, and never get hit.(He came very close on a dike in Holland, though!)
He had held and Important position in his local Fire Dept., even up to when he was 90 years old. Only recently had he started to be asked to talk at schools and events. John was part of the October 17, 1944 Rescue mission which saved 120 British Airborne soldiers of the Red Devils. And he was also part of a bazooka team which took out a German tank, which was depicted in episode 3 of Band of Brothers.
