The PTO battles have always been one of the bigger 'smaller' battles usually numbering about 100 reenactors. However, it has always been hard to get enough Japanese reenactors to attend. What makes the PTO battles so popular?
I get a lot of feedback from people who attend the PTO's, especially first timers who are usually shocked at how fun they are and different from usual battles. You see and experience things that are far different from the norm.
Just a couple weeks ago I was approached by a guy who came out as Allied and he told me how much fun he had at the battle last year. His reaction was one I have heard from more than one person. He was literally scared out of his wits during our night raid. I really believe its this fear of not knowing whats coming and the unexpected found at the PTO battles that keep them coming back for more. When was the last time you went to any battle and were really, really scared? It doesn't get any more real than that without using real bullets.
For the Japanese its much different. We aren't going to win. If you come to a battle and you want to win, this isn't it. Typically our forces are outnumbered 2 or 3 to one. The best we can hope for is to hold off the attack for a length of time and it happens but the outcome remains the same. However, its the extreme satsifaction that we can literally screw with the allies heads that makes it fun for me and we take that seriously. If your Japanese expect a LOT of trigger time!
You never know what we will be doing any particular year. We have a large reperatoire of tricks and try to rotate them around so no one knows what to expect at any given battle. Booby traps, spider holes, full guille type suits, night attacks with sound effects, grenades by the bushel and more. If your objective is a village, there will be a village there, complete with all kinds of props. If its an airfield, we replicate an airfield. For the allies, they don't know if the ground will suddenly open up and shoot them or that bush will come alive and kill them. And then the booby traps!
This year won't be any different and of course I can't tell you whats in store but rest assured, its out there... be ready.
I NEED TO HEAR FROM ANYONE COMING AS JAPANESE. WE NEED A HEAD COUNT TODAY!
