A new living history unit is in the process of forming in the greater Sacramento, CA, area, named 'Sanitatsdienst der Deutsches Luftwaffe, Lebendiger Geschichte'. Intended to maintain the traditions and history of the German Luftwaffe's medical services in the Second World War through living history reenactment impressions, membership is open to anyone with interest in the greater history of the German Luftwaffe (WW2), but particularly in the Luftwaffe's Medical Services branch. Those individuals with a background in medicine, nursing, paramedical and/or lab technology professions are particularly encouraged to inquire. The 'Sanitatsdienst der Deutsches Luftwaffe' was unique in that its 'aeromedical evacuation' staffeln pilots were also fully qualified medical doctors, who wore the blue waffenfarbe of Luftwaffe medical services (rather than the yellow waffenfarbe of regular fliegertruppe) and took operational command orders from that branch, while piloting casualty evacuation aircraft (such as the Fi-1 56 'Storch' and the Ju-52 3M 'Tante Ju'). SdL units were active in all theatres of the war and its personnel were responsible for daily heroic acts of bravery that seldom achieved public awareness or acclaim (unlike the popular fighter and bomber forces). Part of our mission is to redress this awareness deficit.
At present, the primary initial intent is to plan appearances at local air shows, 'fly-in' events, and museum exhibits. The history of the WW2 Luftwaffe medical services is a rich and fascinating one. Please contact us to express an interest in this group and for further details.
