Here is some history -
A little California City history: The area in which California City is located was largely uninhabited prior to the last half of the century. A Franciscan missionary camped at Castle Butte (part of our battle area) in 1776. In the late 19th century Twenty Mule Team Trail (a road on the way into H camp) which carried loads of Borax to towns folk (we met Officer Craig at the Borax Sheriff’s Station during our trip there).
The town of California City got its start when in 1958 real estate developer and sociology professor Nat Mendelsohn purchased 80,000 acres in the Mojave desert with the dream of creating the next biggest city, a city bigger and more notable than Los Angeles.
Development got off to a good start with paved roads, housing tracks laid out and even plans for a Central Park however the expected growth and investment money did not come in as planned and the plans for this grand city evaporated in the desert heat. To this day a vast grid of paved roads can still be seen (and you will drive right by them going to H park). Oddly enough small pieces of Cal Cities desert are privately owned mainly by Japanese business men who bought into the idea years ago. On our trip to Cal City we learned that it was very fashionable in the late 50’s early 60’s for Japanese citizens to own even the smallest slice of California. As a result even our battlefield may touch Japanese owned California.
